Tech Support Scams, Fake Virus Pop-Ups and Computer Virus Scams

A loud warning fills your screen: “Your computer is infected. Call this number now.” Or someone calls saying they’re from Microsoft, Apple or your internet company. Real companies don’t do this. Here’s what to do.

Warning signs

  • A pop-up with a phone number, alarms or a countdown that won’t close
  • A “Microsoft” or “Apple” call or email about a virus, a hacked account or a refund you’re owed
  • They ask you to download a program so they can “connect” to your computer (remote access)
  • They ask you to log in to your bank, or to pay by gift card, wire or cryptocurrency

What to do

  1. Don’t call the number on the pop-up, and don’t click anything in it.
  2. Close the browser. If it won’t close, restart the computer.
  3. Hang up on anyone who calls you about a computer problem you didn’t report.
  4. If you let someone in, disconnect from the internet, call your bank, and change your passwords from another device.
  5. See what to do if you’ve been scammed for the full steps.
